The 2012 winter season has officially been declared as being here with the first snow fall this past weekend in the Lesotho Highlands. The mountain pass getting to the Katse Dam was snowed in, leaving several vehicles stranded overnight. The snow storm struck quickly, surprising travelers who were not prepared for snow this early in the season. Several vehicles “lost the road” and collided into the barrier and countless others that were not 4×4 had to be abandoned on the pass. A cautionary note to any travelers going to Katse that they need to prepare for all weather conditions this time of the year.

Community Soccer Tournament
Highlands Trout recently sponsored 10 soccer balls and 4 trophies for a community soccer tournament hosted by the Katse community. The tournament was in aid of a campaign to raise awareness against women and child abuse. There were 10 teams, so we were able to give each a ball. The semi-finals and finalist each got a trophy. Jonny and the rest of the Katse HT team were there and it was a great day. The winning team had four chaps in that work full time for HT!!!!

Tractor arrival at Highlands Trout
Large equipment that will be used in the day to day activities have started arriving on site at Highlands Trout. Tractor and trailers were imported from South Africa and the long mountainous journey is a feat to accomplish. The remoteness of this site makes all logistics a nightmare and careful planning and coordination is required.
Swim training and boat safety at Highlands Trout
Boat safety and swim training in action at Katse

All staff at Highlands Trout underwent specialist swim training and boat safety lessons this month. Mike, a community volunteer and swim coach from the USA that is living in the area on a two year programme, was commissioned to offer the training. Staff members that have never swam before were competent swimmers within two weeks. Training included boat safety, boat regulations, safety equipment and accidental “man over board” procedures.
