ABASA Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture Facility

Feasibility Study

A feasibility study was undertaken for Aquabase Aquaculture South Africa (ABASA) in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Development Corporation

The feasibility study included the following components:

  • An assessment of suitable sites in the Eastern Cape
  • A comprehensive literature review of IMTA
  • Comparison between IMTA and alternative aquaculture systems
  • Species selection
  • National and global market analyses
  • Systems technology and operations
  • Bio-model
  • Financial model
  • Conceptual design
  • Risk assessment
  • Detailed implementation plan

It was concluded that the development of an IMTA project using dusky kob, abalone and seaweed (Ulva) had the potential to significantly contribute to skills development, local employment and livelihoods creation in the area.
