Advance Africa was contracted by Karingani Game Reserve to conduct a baseline fish and fisheries assessment of Massingir Dam within the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA) in Gaza Province, Mozambique. One of the key objectives of Karingani is the preservation of the area's long-term ecological health while, at the same time, generating new livelihood opportunities for rural communities.
Karingani has recognised the potential contribution that fisheries could make to rural communities, as well as the need to manage the resource in line with conservation objectives. However, there is a significant lack of information upon which to sustainable develop and manage fisheries in Massingir Dam to achieve these goals. This study aims to address these knowledge gaps through a comprehensive baseline survey of the status of fish and fisheries in Massingir Dam. The outcome will be a fit-for-purpose management framework founded on the principles of social, ecological, and economic sustainability.
