In 2017-2018, Advance Africa developed a Land Use Plan (LUP) for Liuwa Plain National Park in Western Province, Zambia, and in 2023 we were tasked with undertaking the first five-year revision of the LUP. The LUP is designed to support the Park’s General Management Plan, by balancing conservation, social and economic (tourism) objectives in a Park characterised by concerted rewilding and conservation efforts alongside a growing human population.
To do this, we updated the Situational Analysis for the Park based on the latest available information and data and in light of the past five years of LUP implementation; we assessed the suitability of the Zonation Plan contained within the previous LUP; and assessed the degree to which the Implementation Plan outlined in the previous LUP had been achieved, and the impacts thereof. These activities were conducted through a combination of desktop-based reviews, comprehensive stakeholder engagements and key informant interviews.
Based on the findings, a revised LUP was prepared, including an updated Zonation Plan and a new five-year Implementation Plan. This was eagerly agreed to by all stakeholder parties.
