Advance Africa were contracted by the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) to establish the Biodiversity Management Unit (BMU) as a specialised unit within the LHDA responsible for monitoring and evaluation of water quality, integrated ecosystems management and the conservation of biodiversity in the Lesotho Highlands.
This work included the definition of core business activities, human resource job descriptions, action plans and operational terms of reference of the BMU as well as scientific mentoring and report writing. Training included lectures and classes followed by field visits to apply the learnt techniques and allow attendees to gain in-field data collection experience. The trainees also learnt scientific reporting skills. Finally, Standard Operating Procedures were developed which served to provide a continuous focus and supportive role to trainees and the agency.
