Our Professor Emeritus Tom Hecht was contracted by the South African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat to develop the SADC Aquaculture Strategy and Action Plan (RASAP).
The RASAP provides strategic direction for the rapid and environmentally responsible development of aquaculture in SADC Member States, while simultaneously safeguarding the ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems, conserving common genetic resources and supporting the maintenance of regional aquatic biosecurity. Actions were also identified for advancing the development of cross border value chains that better enable the utilization of aquatic and human resources within the region. The RASAP was adopted by the SADC Council of Ministers in 2016 and provides a platform for sustainable aquaculture development in the region.
