The South African Kelp Farming Project (KFP) was established in recognition of the opportunity to develop a financially and environmentally sustainable kelp farming industry in South Africa. Advance Africa was tasked by the Bivalve Shellfish Farmers Association of South Africa (BSASA) - the implementing organisation of the KFP - with conducting a market assessment and value chain analysis, towards understanding the economic viability of commercial kelp farming in the country.
This assignment comprised stakeholder mapping, engagements and interviews; value chain profiling, including an overview of the current value chain and an assessment of gaps and inefficiencies in the value chain; an assessment of the current socio-economic impact of the value chain and opportunities for improvement; and the preparation of a roadmap for expansion and strengthening of the kelp value chain in South Africa
