The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division of the FAO contracted our senior consultant Jim McCafferty to conduct a South African case study to inform the chapter on Disasters and Climate change Impacts on the Fisheries and Aquaculture sector for the flagship publication “Report on the impact of disasters and climate change in agriculture and food security”.
Jim conducted stakeholder engagements and a literature review to (a) document the impacts of natural disasters and extreme weather events on the national economy, and in particular the impact on the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in relation to floods, droughts, fires and harmful algae blooms in South Africa in 2020-2022; and (b) analyse local policies, data availability and applicability of the FAO Damage and Loss methodology (including current submission to SENDAI Framework) in South Africa. Jim also reviewed the applicability and feasibility of including damage and loss data collection in national programmes, and the possibility of setting up ‘damage and loss’ databases for improved evaluations and increased knowledge
